Most Christian religions believe that the Godhead is a single being, the Holy Trinity. This belief stems from the Nicene Creed. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I believe that God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three distinct beings. Surprisingly, this is often one of the reasons we are deemed to not be Christians.
Now, I want to carefully not tread on any toes. However, there are multiple accounts in multiple scriptures that support the fact that there are three beings, not one. The Creed was created by a group of men who basically were trying to establish what was and what was not Christian. The scriptural records were recorded by prophets of God, and followed actual events that indicated a plurality rather than a singularity. One of the most powerful of these scriptures comes from our doctrine. It is the account of the first vision. I invite you, if you are reading, to read the next part out loud. Trust me, it changes how the whole thing feels:
"I saw a pillar of light, exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. When this light rested upon me, I saw two personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other, and said: This is my beloved son. Hear him."
(Joseph Smith History, V16)
This is something we teach our missionaries to memorize so they can declare it without hesitation. It is a powerful reminder that God and Jesus Christ visited the earth. There were two distinct beings, and they spoke to Joseph Smith. After this, Joseph's entire life became focused on bringing forth the gospel of Jesus Christ in the form of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He lived and died because of this vision. He was only a young boy at the time, but this so influenced the rest of his life that his entire life became focused on a single goal; to restore the gospel of Jesus Christ.
